Law is a system of rules, usually enforced through a set of institutions. Laws can shape or reflect politics, economics and society in numerous ways and serves as a primary social mediator of relations between people.

Contract law regulates everything from buying a bus ticket to trading on derivatives markets. Property law defines rights and obligations related to the transfer and title of personal (often referred to as chattel) and real property. Trust law applies to assets held for investment and financial security, while tort law allows claims for compensation if a person's rights or property are harmed.

If the harm is criminalised in a statute, criminal law offers means by which the state can prosecute the perpetrator. Constitutional law provides a framework for the creation of law, the protection of human rights and the election of political representatives. Administrative law is used to review the decisions of government agencies, while international law governs affairs between sovereign nation states in activities ranging from trade to environmental regulation or military action. Writing in 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle declared, "The rule of law is better than the rule of any individual."

Legal systems elaborate rights and responsibilities in a variety of ways. A general distinction can be made between civil law jurisdictions, which codify their laws, and common law systems, where judge made law is not consolidated. In some countries, religion informs the law. Law provides a rich source of scholarly inquiry, into legal history, philosophy, economic analysis or sociology. Law also raises important and complex issues concerning equality, fairness and justice. "In its majestic equality", said the author Anatole France in 1894, "the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread."

In a typical democracy, the central institutions for interpreting and creating law are the three main branches of government, namely an impartial judiciary, a democratic legislature, and an accountable executive. To implement and enforce the law and provide services to the public, a government's bureaucracy, the military and police are vital. While all these organs of the state are creatures created and bound by law, an independent legal profession and a vibrant civil society inform and support their progress.

Why is it legal for stores to sell marijuana paraphernalia? Why are some but not others shut down?
Q. I have recently seen reports of several shops (everything from a headshop to a gas station) being shut down and fined for selling pipes, bongs ect... The law states they are legal so why are they raided sometimes? How can they be legal? They are obviously used to consume marijuana. Now lets not turn this into a discussion on if weed should be legal or not but how can it be ok to sell sometimes but not other times? Technically how can a piece of glass be illegal to sell?

A. If you've ever been in one of those stores, then they have signs everywhere that say "For tobacco use only." So, legally speaking, all of the stuff they sell is for smoking tobacco out of. Now, do most of the people who buy them actually smoke tobacco out of them? Of course not. The store owners know that, and the police know that. But we have this whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing going on, and it's totally legal to sell pipes and such for the use of smoking tobacco out of them, so it's not clear that the store owners or the customers are doing anything illegal. It's illegal to sell things for the purpose of smoking marijuana. So, as a previous answerer said, there are never "bowls" or "bongs" in a head shop--there are… [cont.]

I would like to ask you what are the legal procedures to let people advertise and pay a certain amount of money to me every month they want my online services in order for them to advertise on my website and do all of this legally? What should I do to make this legal? What are the basic procedures? Please, help me, I don't know anything about Law and I need to get more information in order to make my online business possible. Thank you. I'm in Alberta, Canada.

A. I am not very sure about the law in Canada. But for online advertising, you doesn't need to get into law. You can create a business account in paypal and people can pay to that account without any legal formalities.

What is the legal way to get someone off a lease after they decide to quit paying rent?
Q. I know someone who is on a lease but refuses to give up their key to the residence. They claim to still a resident of the domicile and will not pay rent or utilities but still insist that they are entitled to enter the residence. What is the legal way to fix this problem? This person does not reside in the home any longer but for some reason feels entitled to maintain copies of the house key and mailbox key. Is this legal? I am not the landlord but a co-applicant on the lease.
