How trainable are Old English Sheepdogs and where can I get them?
Q. I've always loved Old English Sheepdogs and they are one of the few beeds of dogs I particularly like. I also like grooming and taking care of animals so I know it would be a good pet for me, eventually [not while i'm still in college]. However, could I train them to be a guard dog also? and do they get along with cats?
Asked by apple picking - Tue Sep 8 11:24:27 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Guard dog, no, a good dog to have fun with, maybe, it depends on where the dog came from, how good his genetics would be and what kind of time and effort you invested in the dog. Getting along with cats is not a breed issue, it is an individual dog and a training issue. Hope I helped.

Can an Old English Bulldogge be trained to sniff out drugs?
Q. Just wondering if an Old English Bulldogge can be trained to be a drug sniffing dog.
Asked by intheloopchicago - Mon Aug 13 01:01:01 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Definitely! Really, any breed has the nose to sniff out drugs. A dog also needs to have interest and drive. The Olde English Bulldogge, from what I know of it, has mostly been maintained as a working breed, so I think it could do great as a drug sniffer. Hounds and bird dogs have been developed to have better noses as well as a greater interest in what they smell. Bulldogs, on the other hand, have more difficulty smelling because of their squashed nose. However, bulldogs have been trained to do scent-discrimination exercises and tracking. And OEBs have less of an extreme nose than the English Bulldogs. I think as a breed with a strong working heritage, an Olde English Bulldogge could excel as a drug detection dog.

Q. my old english sheepdog is about 1 and a half yrs. and ive never shaved her. and crazy me left her in the rain so i guess she had fun and played in it. now she has big nots and is matted pretty bad. my mom says shave her. but if i shave her i have to do it my self and ive never did it. so yeah. anybody got any advice?
Asked by Sasha - Tue May 20 08:46:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Don't let her get wet again before you do it, it'll only make them tighter. If you really have to do it yourself, make sure that when you're shaving her you check the clippers every few minutes to make sure they aren't hot. It's really easy to burn them. Let the clippers cool before you start again.

A. The company that makes this product, "Reckitt Benckiser" has it's orgins in England, going back to 1814. A series of mergers, joint ventures and partnerships got them involved in household cleaning supplies, including a merger with the Mason Brothers to form the "Chiswick Polish Company" in 1913. In 1990, they aquired "Boyle-Midway", an American company that produced Woolite, Easy-Off, Sani-Flush, Wizard and Old English brands. The "Old English" line of products was invented by Mr. Lee Expert between 1964 and 1978 when he worked for Boyle-Midway (also knows as American Home Products) So...about the oldest it could be is about 40 years old. I know it looks older!

To acquaint oneself with Old English and Old Norse pronunciation is Icelandic or West Frisian a better bet?
Q. Some say West Frisian most closely resembles Old English and that Old Norse most resembles Icelandic. I read elsewhere that Icelandic resembles both Old English and Old Norse moreso than West Frisian. Thoughts?
Asked by dinosaur_x24 - Thu Apr 23 12:51:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Icelandic more closely resembles old Norse, due to its age and purity, and the fact that both Old Norse and Icelandic are viking languages. - The language involves heavy inflection and a runic letters, one of which is not used any more in other Scandinavian languages. Over the years, only minute fractions of pronunciation have changed, but the alphabet, grammar and vocabulary has been mostly preserved. Even today, very few "modern" words are based off of Latin or Greek. Instead, they are compound words based off of already existing Icelandic words. West Frisian is closer to Old English because of its Germanic roots and integration of some Romance language characteristics. - West Frisian has more anomalies that are caused by French… [cont.]

What are some interesting old english books?
Q. I'm trying to get into all that type of stuff, but I'm having trouble finding good old english books. I'm not a big fan of Mark Twain because it's, honestly, really boring. So, nothing like that (or by him.. Unless there is an actual interesting one). I would also like it to be somewhat easy to understand. Something that I can make sense of. Thanks for your time.

A. If you are interested in reading old english books then you should start with: Canterbury Tales: Geoffrey Chaucer You might have some trouble with the old english writing style but it is a classic. (I am personally not a fan) If you want to check out some older books that are interesting and pretty cool here is a list of a few that might capture you interest. Gulliver's Travels: Johnathan Swift The Trial: Franz Kafka 1984: George Orwell Heart of Darkness: Joseph Conrad\ Brave New World: Aldous Huxley The Outsider: Albert Camus Journey to the End of the Night: Ferdinand Celine I am not a big fan of Chaucer, but these other books are all really awesome and if you are trying to get into older literature that is good I think you might enjoy… [cont.]

A. Well, without knowing exactly where in the world you are at it is not easy to help with all the details you require! Your best bet is to contact your nearest Animal care center...I am sure they will be only too happy to help. Also it could help if you put an advertisement in the local News Papers. Lastly of course Google it clearly mentioning your country, city/town, etc. Good Luck!!!.

A. If you aren't particularly fluent in English, you might have more luck through computer and television so she can learn the correct dialect and pronunciation. I believe Rosetta Stone makes programs for kids, and if you can't afford an actual program, you could simply immerse her in the language, through tv programs and computer games from the US (playhousedisney.com, starfall.com, nickjr.com, etc.) It won't be an easy task, but the more exposed she is, the easier it will be for her to learn!

Does anyone know the translation from old english to today's english of the Declaration of Independence?
Q. I would like to know the translation from old english to modern day english of the Declaration of Independence. Could someone help me. I would like to know really what it is talking about, like the Statement of human rights's. Could someone translate it for me?
Asked by Lauren - Sun Aug 16 13:21:47 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Declaration of Independence was NOT written in Old English. Old English stopped being spoken by 1100, and the language began to resemble modern English by the 1300s, when Chaucer wrote his Canterbury Tales (that was Middle English). You'll even struggle reading Sumer Is Icumen In. Trust me, the Declaration of Independence uses only language we speak today, if you don't understand a word, search it in the dictionary, those words are still used today, plus it'll enrich your vocabulary. Here's an example of real Old English, this is the Charter of King Cnut from around 1020 AD, actually around when Old English began to evolve towards Middle English. Cnut cyning gret his arcebiscopas and his leod-biscopas and Thurcyl eorl and ealle his… [cont.]

How would a proper old english lady excuse herself from dinner to go to the bathroom?
Q. so i was wondering how someone from old english times (back when there were princesses and kings and queens and stuff) excuses theirself to go to the bathroom? and how would they say bathroom cause i dont think they called it a bathroom
Asked by Aislinn - Sun Jun 22 19:41:30 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would think that 'Please excuse me' would suffice. There is no need to say where you are going. Then once they are away from the table, there are always servants around to ask. The same holds true today. If I am having dinner out, I just say, "Please excuse me" and get up. If I don't know where the restroom is, I will ask the host or hostess of the establishment.

A. I'm not sure what you're asking for. Old English is the language that was used in early medieval England. Nobody has written in it for almost 1,000 years. Goods books written in England shortly before or after 1900 include Jude the Obscure (Hardy), The Portrait of Dorian Gray (Wilde), and The Hound of the Baskervilles (Conan Doyle).

whats the difference between an english and old english bulldog?
Q. I was told that (when I adopted him) my dog was an english bulldog, but hes 8 months old and weighs 70 pounds...english bulldogs don't normally weigh that much. he looks like an english (2 1/2 ft tall 3 1/2 ft wide w/ jowls that get bigger every day) but i think he may be an old english...does any one know?
Asked by Amanda D - Thu Feb 7 09:50:27 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The difference to me: Olde English Bulldogges are free breeders/free whelpers that have clear breathing, and their life expectancy is between 10 to 14 years. Oldes range in height: Males - 18 to 20 inches at the shoulder. Females - 17 to 19 inches at the shoulder. Oldes ideal weight: Between 50 to 70 lbs. for females and 65 to 85 lbs. for males. Oldes are very intelligent, and very eager to please their people. I own 4 Oldes, when we decided to get a 'bulldog' we researched several alternatives, several bully breeds-and found the Olde to be right for our family. You will not be disappointed if your little guy is an Olde rather than an "akc" bulldog. FYI-it can take up to age 3 before the bullies fully mature into what they will… [cont.]

I know the walmart around here has puppy milk. there is a lot you have to do. they can't poo by themselves, the mother licks their bottoms to make them do that, your gonna have to do that (not lick the puppies but, but with a damp cloth.) Its a lot of work, best of luck to you.
